Eskom reported a financial-year-to-date energy availability factor (EAF) of 68.1% for 1 April to 22 October 2026, compared with 62.48% over the corresponding period a year earlier. Diesel expenditure for the same year-to-date period was R1.26 billion, down from R6.07 billion.

The figures show improvement in the year-to-date EAF alongside a substantial reduction in diesel spending. They do not, by themselves, establish an effect on electricity tariffs.

Year-to-date generation availability improves

Eskom’s EAF for 1 April to 22 October 2026 was 68.1%, 5.62 percentage points above the 62.48% recorded for the corresponding period a year earlier. The comparison covers the financial year to date, rather than a single week.

The weekly measure was lower: EAF for 16–22 October 2026 was 64.84%, compared with 65.81% in the corresponding week of 2025. This provides a more mixed picture than the year-to-date comparison alone.

Diesel expenditure falls by R4.81 billion

Eskom’s diesel expenditure through 22 October was R1.26 billion, compared with R6.07 billion in the matching prior-year period. The difference was R4.81 billion, a reduction of 79.20%.

For business and financial monitoring, the spending comparison gives a concrete measure of the change in Eskom’s year-to-date diesel outlay. The cited figures do not independently establish why expenditure declined or show how the change affects tariffs.

Eskom’s update on loadshedding

Eskom said it had recorded 525 consecutive days without loadshedding as of its 23 October 2026 update. This is the status reported in that update, not a forecast of future supply conditions.
