South Africa recorded a preliminary trade surplus of R20.5 billion in August 2026, according to figures released by the South African Revenue Service (SARS). Exports totalled R181.8 billion and imports R161.3 billion. The figures include trade with Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia.

Exports and imports both declined from July

Compared with July 2026, exports fell by R11.3 billion, or 5.8%, while imports fell by R13.7 billion, or 7.8%. The August surplus therefore sits alongside declines in both sides of the reported trade flows.

July balance revised

SARS revised July’s preliminary trade surplus from R20.1 billion to a final R18.0 billion because of ongoing Vouchers of Correction. The revision is relevant when comparing the reported balances for the two months: August’s R20.5 billion figure remains preliminary, while the cited July figure is final.
