The South African Revenue Service (SARS) announced on 2 October 2026 that taxpayers, registered representatives and registered tax practitioners can request the unmerging of incorrectly merged cases through eFiling.

The option is limited to cases that were previously merged or auto-merged. It does not apply to every tax profile correction.

What a request involves

SARS’s guide says an eFiling unmerge request requires a declaration and a reason. Users can check submitted requests and related correspondence through eFiling. SARS says relevant stakeholders receive a letter approving or rejecting the request.

What to check after a correction

SARS advises taxpayers to review their registered particulars after a profile correction. Some information may revert to a previous state and need updating, so the outcome of an unmerge request is not the only item to check.

For eligible cases, the eFiling option provides a way to submit the request and check its correspondence in the same system. The requirement to give a reason, and the possibility that registered particulars will need updating afterward, remain practical considerations for requesters.
